Hi there, and welcome!

I'd like to share a little background about Kilalo and how this will enrich the therapeutic experience that we’ve created for you.

Kilalo is a Swahili word. Like many words drawn from other languages, it defies precise English translation but in broad terms, it is …… a resting place.

The word conjures up more than a place – it can be thought of as something you can depend on, somewhere you can rest, someone that places you at ease….a shared moment that is still uniquely yours, in an exquisitely calming, soothing and nurturing way.

This single, evocative word captured my imagination. I was drawn to the intrigue and the promise of this appealing concept, because it applies in so many ways to the essence of the client experience we offer you in our studio.

As a member of the Red Cross Disaster Services Team, I have served as a volunteer providing pain relief therapy to rescue teams, as well as emergency supplies, comfort and first aid to local residents, at the sites of three profound disasters - the terrorist attacks at Ground Zero in September 2001, hurricane Katrina in September 2005 and the Joplin tornado in June 2011.

Basic facilities were severely limited on board the Spirit of New York, 55 yards from the remains of the World Trade Center, at the "Camp Katrina" Carolina Med-1 mobile hospital on the Gulf Coast, located in the ruins of a devastated shopping center parking lot, 55 miles east of New Orleans, and in the 8-square mile tornado impact area of 8,000 damaged or destroyed Joplin homes and businesses.

Our creative challenge was how to transform therapy forged in Spartan settings with the urgency of rescue work into artistic healing. That mastery is a journey. It inspires us every day and forms the basis of Kilalo’s services and products.

We have learned how to create a blissful sense of peace, how to adapt standard therapy techniques to the need for immediate pain relief, relaxation, stress reduction, and how to share open space without losing the soothing peace or privacy around your chair or table.

I hope to have the privilege of meeting you at our studio in the near future!
